Big Bluestem
Description:  A long lived perennial, that is the "king" leading grass that dominates the prairie. This plants produces beautiful foliage that grows 5 – 6 foot tall. Known as a sod forming grass that turns reddish purple with a turkey-foot seed head. Ideal planting times are between April 1 to May 15th, soils will need to be approximately 60 degrees for the seeds to germinate. Prefers a well packed seed bed after planting. Does well in hot droughty sites and tolerates medium to low fertility. Slow to establish the first year, but by the second year end a nice stand should be evident. Seeding rate of 15 – 20 lbs per acre.
