A perennial legume with dark green foliage and pinkish lavender to white clusters of flowers. Each growing season new foliage shoots from the multi-branch creeping root system. Plants grow to a height of 3 feet. The intermediate growth produces numerous clusters of flowers on long stalks from June until September. Once established, crownvetch grows aggressively and provides excellent cover. It reproduces by spreading underground roots and dropping seed. Very slow to start but will produce good cover within two years. Grows well in shallow, low fertility, clayey, loam, sandy sites. It has excellent drought tolerance and poor shade tolerance. Requires well drained soils. An excellent food source for upland game birds, deer and other wildlife. Seeding rate of 1 pound per 1000 square feet. Should be seeded from November through August.
