Red Top
Red Top
Description:
A perennial that is fast starting, sod forming grass that is about 18 inches tall at maturity. The leaves are narrow and the stems are fine. Because it is fast starting and tolerates cold temperatures and poorly drained soils, red top is widely used in disturbed project sites in the midwest. It provides quick cover for critical areas such as waterways, road banks, strip mine sites. Red top performs well in low fertility environments, acid, clayey, loamy and sandy soils. It is noted to have fair drought tolerance and tolerates poorly drained sites excellently. Established by seed in spring or early fall. Seeding rate of 5 to 6 pounds per acre. An effective ground cover can be expected the first year.
